Clinical and stabilometric tests were performed by Dr Rossato to assess balance: 3,972 subjects aged 5 to 87 were observed and recorded on cyber-sabots, in static equilibrium at 40Hz during 51.2 sec, with eyes open and closed. These age and gender-based analyses offer an assessment of the different components of balance through 36 different stabilometric parameters.
EQUIPMENT AND METHODOLOGY
The subjects were measured by the same operator in a transparent cabin patented for this purpose. A visual target is placed at the eye level two metres from the subject. Data is recorded with eyes open and closed.
From a two-way analysis of variance (age and gender) we will expose the different data according to age and gender. The Surface and Length parameters display a U curb which shows an evolution and a maturation of the static balancing system, which achieve greater stability from the age of 30 to 60 for women (W) and only from the age of 40 to 50 for men (M) before undergoing slow degradation. As for the Length parameter, e.g. with eyes open, values fluctuate over a 10 year period from 650 mm to 450 mm (at the age of 40), and from 550 mm to 400 mm (at the age of 30) for women before reaching respectively 550 mm (M) and 520 mm (W) at the age of 80.
Most stabilometric parameters are evolving with a distinction between men and women, which we had already noticed among children (Bourgeois, 2003) but also among adults and seniors. Girls and later women stabilize at an earlier stage at the age of 30, whereas men only reach stability at the age of 40. The balance system of men shows less stable characteristics than that of women. This demonstrates that the static balancing system is far from reaching maturity after adolescence and presents different components according to the gender of the subjects.
